Trail Rides

Reservations are requested to ensure availability of horses, and we recommend that you make these reservations two to three days in advance. We try to get all rides out on time, but will allow fifteen minutes for those who get “stuck in traffic.” We prefer, however, that you arrive half an hour before your scheduled ride to allow time for helmets to be fitted and releases signed. If you need to cancel or change the reservation, please call a minimum of three hours before the scheduled time.

Previous riding experience is not necessary. The Gateway staff and its well-trained horses cater to the inexperienced rider. All rides are led by a certified trail guide and followed by an assistant guide. While Gateway offers both English and western riding, we recommend using a western saddle for riders with little or no experience. If a member of your party requires a Gateway staff member to walk beside his or her horse, there will be an additional fee.

Our guides will take you at a walk and trot (if desired) on several trails that take you through our scenic terrain of woods and fields along the Pennsylvania/Delaware border. For safety reasons, there are no more than ten riders in any one group; however, more than one group can be scheduled at the same time. Special arrangements can be made for guided private or semi-private rides. However, riding double is not allowed. In addition to our regular hour-long rides, we also can schedule half-hour mini trail rides. While this shorter ride is ideal for families with children under the age of 8, it is also suitable for beginning riders of any age.

We have mounts of all sizes, from small ponies up to our gentle giants, the draft horses. Those big guys are good mounts for any age, but are also the ones we use for riders weighing over 200 pounds. Our insurance requires the use of a safety equestrian helmet, but we do provide helmets for you. We ask all riders to wear long pants, regardless of the weather, and hard-soled shoes with a small heel. Gloves are advised for cold weather.
